Initially, the game was played on land-based casinos. In the late 1980s, the game started making its way into the online casino world and it wasn’t popular at first. Later, the progressive jackpot was added to the game and that’s when Caribbean Stud Poker skyrocketed in popularity.

Online Caribbean Stud Poker vs Live Dealer Caribbean Stud Poker
In online Caribbean Stud Poker, the cards are dealt by the system while in live dealer Caribbean Stud Poker cards are dealt by a live dealer
The online games are more virtual-like while the live game is more real as players and dealer's can communicate with each other
Online players can play several tables at once while live players are only limited to one table
The Caribbean Five Card Stud Poker rules are quite simple. You have to factor in that you can’t change or improve your hand once the cards have already been dealt. The game is played between the dealer and the player, but several players can sit at one of the Caribbean Stud Poker tables and play against the dealer.
On the table layout, there are three betting spots; the first is known as the ante. Unlike standard poker games, the ante bet is a initial bet that each player must place so as to receive cards. Once you place the ante bet, the dealer will deal each player five cards face-down. The dealer also deals himself five cards face down except the final card which is dealt face up. Next, you look at your hand rankings and make a choice to play or fold based on the results.
During the gameplay, you can choose to fold your hand, and this means that the hand will be discarded and you will lose your bet. If you want to stay in the game, you have to place a raise wager bet equal to the ante’s double size. This bet is placed in the box behind the ante bet box. When all the betting is done, the dealer will expose their hand.
The dealer qualifies if they have the minimum hand of ace and king or higher. However, if the dealer’s hand doesn’t have the minimum, the hand doesn’t qualify and you will receive even bonus money on the ante bet. If the dealer qualifies they will then open the players hand a payout accordingly. If the dealer's hand is a higher value than the player then the player will lose both the ante bet and the back bet.

Progressive Jackpots
In Caribbean poker a progressive jackpot feature is very separate from the main game. For you to be eligible, you place a side bet or bonus bet and then work on raising your hand. The side bet is optional, and it’s the only way you will qualify for the progressive jackpot.
Every time you place a side bet, a portion of that money goes to the progressive jackpot pool, in general around 70%. To win the casino jackpot a player will need to be holding a Royal Flush.
Other pokers hands such as a straight flush, four of a kind and a full house will qualify for some share of the jackpot prize. The beauty of the jackpot is that the player is paid no matter if the card stud poker dealer qualifies or not.

For you to win and probably profit from Caribbean Stud poker you have to apply the right strategy. There are various ways of legitimately gaining an advantage over the casino while playing the game. Some of these methods involve taking advantage of bonuses, promotions and computer point systems.
As long as the game isn’t rigged and it’s functioning in a fair manner you should benefit from this strategy. One of the best ways for you to gain an edge over the house is by using progressive jackpots.
Another key strategy is that you should know when it’s the right time to raise or fold. You should never fold a pair and you should fold anything less than Ace and a King. This is especially applicable if you are a novice player.
This is known as the basic Caribbean Stud poker strategy. It’s also advisable that you raise with Pair or Better. The term “raise” means paying an additional bet after the hands have been dealt. So, in case you are dealt with any pair, you should pay the extra bet before facing the dealer’s cards.
If you have an Ace and a King, always bet if the card facing up is Queen or Lower. You can also use the Ace-King to your advantage if the dealer’s card is a queen or lower. In such a case, you should bet. By following this strategy you will gain an advantage over the house and possibly earn some profit.
However, whatever game you choose, remember the casino always has the edge and will win over the long term. The most important rule to remember is to play responsibly and know when to stop.
House Edge of Caribbean Stud Poker
The house edge is the name given to the percentage a casino will win over the long-term in a particular game and might vary from one casino to the other depending on the casino’s paytable. Another factor that determines the house edge is the size of the progressive jackpots. But in most cases, the house edge of Caribbean Stud Poker remains over 5% even if you play the best possible strategy. This is quite a high percentage compared with other casino table game such as roulette and blackjack.
Variations of Caribbean Stud Poker
There are several Caribbean Stud poker variations and side bets. Below are some of these variations:
Oasis poker
the rules of this game are similar to Caribbean Stud
Lunar poker
this variation is also called Russian Poker.
Change a card Caribbean stud Poker
Many European land-based casinos have introduced a variation to the traditional game whereby a player may change one of their five cards. This will cost the player the same amount as the ante bet. This introduction has made the game more exciting as the player has the chance of improving the poker hand. For example, a player holding three of a kind has the possibility of improving their hand to a full house or even four of a kind by changing one card.
